Ammanford Talking Newspaper

The purpose of the organisation is to provide visually impaired people of the district with local news and other items of information or entertainment, through the medium of audio cassettes, which are posted to them free of charge via the "Articles for the Blind" service provided by Royal Mail.

The Ammanford Talking Newspaper was set up in 1995 as a spin-off from Carmarthen Talking Newspaper because it was percieved that there was a need for more local news in the district. The area covered is roughly the same as that covered by the South Wales Guardain, which is based in Ammanford. We have listeners as far north as Llandovery, as far east as Cwmtwrch and to the South as far as Tumble and Drefach.

Listeners are referred to us by Social Services when they are registered blind or partially sighted.

The aims of the organisation include improving the quality of our service; sending out cassettes more often; involving our listeners more fully in the content of the product and attracting more volunteers.

We have recently been delighted to receive lottery funding under the Awards For All Wales scheme. This has enabled us to purchase a digital recording system, ensuring an easier transition to CD copying and distribution as audio cassettes become less popular.
